Pjila'si

Pjila'si, meaning "welcome" in Mi'kmaw, is not just a gallery. It's an interactive space that celebrates Mi'kmaw culture. It brings to life the knowledge, skills, and adaptability of the Mi'kmaw people throughout history and to this day. It's a place to engage, learn, and reflect.

The creation of Pjila'si was a collaborative effort. A Mi'kmaw Advisory Group (MAG) took the lead in the exhibit process, partnering with the Museum of Natural History and the Nova Scotia Museum. MAG identified the goals and objectives they wanted the exhibit to fulfill, created the gallery's voice, and selected the community belongings to be displayed. They also guided the look and feel of the space.

Language is a vital part of Mi'kmaw culture. The gallery uses Single-word Mi'kmaw concepts throughout because they best reflect cultural memory. Visitors are invited to learn about the language, hear it spoken, and try to speak it for themselves.

Pjila'si—We can't wait to welcome you.
