Science Literacy Week

September 16, 2019 to September 22, 2019

Explore your love of science with special programming from during Science Literacy Week. This coast to coast celebration is a forum for all these great organizations to showcase the amazing work they do year round. 

 

Monday Sept 16 

The Great Identification Showdown (Instagram) 

10 am 

Assume the role of a museum naturalist by joining museum staff on Instagram (@mnhnovascotia) to identify a selection of specimens from the Nature Lab! Insects, arachnids, fossils, and bones – followers will have to break out their field guides and provide their best guess for a chance to show off their identification skills! Each day a new specimen will be presented, with staff tossing out the occasional hint. The first person to answer correctly wins two free day passes to the museum! 

 

Snack Time with … Nova Scotia Wildlife 

10 am 

You’ll find some of Nova Scotia’s rich biodiversity living at the museum. Learn what animals eat and how it connects them to their surroundings, and join us as we feed and care for a variety of native animals. 

 

Science on a Sphere – Space Exploration 

2:30 pm 

Are you interested in the planets? Do you want to take a trip through our solar system?  Join us for a space adventure using Science on a Sphere and the latest information from NASA about our Earth, our Moon, our Sun and all the planets in our solar system. 

 

Tuesday Sept 17

Celebrate Science Literacy Week by joining a naturalist from the Museum of Natural History to learn more about our oceans. Get up close and personal with marine specimens under the microscope and test your identification skills. Check out life beneath the waves!

Sharks of the North Atlantic 

Location: Auditorium 

7 pm 

Dive into the world of sharks! Join Sam Renshaw to learn about the shark species that spend time off the coast of Nova Scotia. Discover how scientists’ study and track these animals and how marine protected areas contribute to shark conservation in Canada and around the world with the help of the Ocean Tracking Network.

Young Children’s Nature Discovery 

9:30 am -11:30 am 

A program specially designed for children ages 5 and under and their parents, grandparents or other caregivers. Drop in for hands-on exploration of real Museum objects, discovery activities, and learning about nature through creative play.
