Like many groups, the Mi’kmaq had their own dances, chants, and songs which could be formal and informal. These were often accompanied by the drum which represents the heartbeat of the people. The Museum of Natural History is offering the opportunity for you to make your own drum under the guidance of Drum Keeper Brian Knockwood.
The Museum of Natural History opens at 9:00 am and the workshop will begin promptly at 9:30 am. There will be a short lunch break. Participants are responsible for their own lunch. Lunch is not provided.
Participants must register at the Museum of Natural History’s front desk and pay the full workshop cost. Cash only please.
Included in the cost of the workshop:
- Smudging ceremony
- Discussion of the history and cultural significance of the drum
- Expert instruction on the drum making process
- 14” cedar drum rim
- Pre-cut and punched hide
- Custom made fiberglass and hide drumstick
