The Gaels in Nova Scotia

May is Gaelic Awareness Month and to celebrate, the Nova Scotia Office of Gaelic Affairs and the Museum of Natural History have partnered to present a brand new exhibit, The Gaels in Nova Scotia.

Most Gaels from Scotland settled across the northeastern mainland of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island between 1773 and the 1850s. Sharing similar values, customs, cultural expression and language, these pioneers established Nova Scotia’s unique Gaelic identity.

Today, the Gaels of Nova Scotia are Canada’s only remaining Gaelic community. It is a group that treasures its language and history, passing their traditions down to new generations and sharing their culture with visitors from near and far.
