Contemporary Quilts Inspired by the Nova Scotia Museum

Historic star pattern quilt from the collection and a modern quilt star design.

By Her Hand: Contemporary Quilts Inspired by the Nova Scotia Museum is an exhibition of contemporary quilts inspired and informed by historic quilts in the Nova Scotia Museum’s collection.

Quilts are storytellers. They tell us about time and place, their makers, and a sense of place. Nova Scotian designers and quiltmakers Andrea Tsang Jackson and Marilyn Smulders have created something new, inspired by something old.

In collaboration with Lisa Bower, Assistant Curator of the Nova Scotia Museum’s Cultural History collection, the artists chose historic quilts from the collection to inspire modern quilt designs. In some cases, the artists were attracted to the patterns – the challenge in making them, what they express, and how they could be re-interpreted in a contemporary context.
